You’re going to learn how licenses work so you can hunt with ease and confidence. Some locations require permits even when metal detecting is allowed, while others only need a basic license. You’ll check with land managers, parks, and local ordinances to stay on the right side of the law. Consider which beaches or events you might search first, and be prepared to verify the rules before you start digging. More clarity ahead.

You can metal detect in National Forests, but you must follow the rules and obtain the proper permissions. Start by checking with the local forest office, since rules vary by location and season, and a permit may be required for certain areas. Avoid sensitive sites and report interesting finds to the forest service. With the right preparation, you can enjoy a rewarding day of digging, but there’s more to learn. Let’s begin with the basics together.

Begin your relic hunt at old farms and small homesteads, where old soil hides farm tools and coins. If you love history, Civil War battlefields and camps offer clues and stories you can uncover with permission. Beaches, ships, and harbor areas also hold lost items, while parks and fairgrounds still yield buttons and coins from days gone by. With the right gear and proper permits, you have many chances to uncover surprises waiting just beneath the surface, so stay curious.
